Serious medical and health conditions like type-2 diabetes and obesity were once relegated only to old age, or for adults. However, the fact that lots of children are suffering from these medical conditions nowadays is a cause for alarm. Obesity is one problem that is becoming more and more prevalent. This is why parents and nutrition experts alike agree that opting for a preventive measure might be more effective than trying to look for a cure.

And this is where appetite suppressants come into the picture. Several parents have difficulty regulating their child’s diet and so they neither have balance nor good nutrition out of their food choices. Apparently, calorie counting and other conservative form of intervention on the child’s diet is not producing any result when it comes to fighting obesity.

There are appetite suppressants like Lipodrene that are recommended by doctors these days, even for children. However, it is not enough to rely on them alone. You need to modify your diet to ensure that its effect is maximized.

Eating natural fibers (plenty of them) is a good start. You must also increase the amount of water you drink, especially before every meal, to make you feel full and it will automatically suppress your desire to eat. Combining it with exercise is what health experts believe is a good way to delay the onset of your hunger.

Of course, health and nutrition experts argue that relying on appetite suppressants alone will not guarantee sustainable results. A change in lifestyle and commitment to a healthier diet or regular exercise is needed. Until then, the child will not be able to let go of this problem and will only recur.

The hectic pace of living in the modern world means that it’s not always easy to choose the healthy food option. Why get up early and have whole meal toast and fresh orange juice, when you can hit snooze one more time and grab a coffee and Danish before you rush in to work? And when six o’clock eventually comes around, it seems like such a waste of precious time to cook from scratch when you can just grab a ready meal and pop it in the microwave.

However, if our bodies could talk they would beg us to reconsider. The term we are what we eat was coined for a reason and people who live on a diet of fast food and convenience meals are just not giving their bodies what they need in order to function at their best.

If you’re one of these people (and you certainly wouldn’t be alone) you’d be surprised how easy and enjoyable it is to cook healthy food from scratch rather than get it from a jar or packet. Preparation time for most healthy meals is not as long as you would think and once you’re in the habit of cooking tasty meals you’ll really start to enjoy it. And don’t forget, healthy doesn’t have to mean tasteless food. Fresh ingredients combined with interesting herbs and spices and a little time in the kitchen can produce delicious results.

If you’d like to make the transition from takeaway to home-cooked, the first thing you need to do is learn a little about nutrition and understand what your body needs in order to stay healthy. Get to grips with the difference between proteins, fats, carbohydrates and vitamins and minerals and you’ll find it so much easier to prepare balanced meals. A little nutrition lesson will also bust some common misconceptions about what health food actually is. For example, thanks in no small part to the way it has been demonised by women’s magazines, most people think that fat is bad for you. But this isn’t really the case. Yes, too much saturated fat is definitely a no no, but good fats are an essential part of a healthy diet. They provide vitamins and minerals, they give us energy and they also add flavour to food.

Changing the way you think about food and understanding what your body really needs in order to stay in tip top shape will make it so much easier to make eating healthy a part of your every day life.

Obesity is one of the leading health problems in America. What makes it an even more alarming problem is the fact that it affects people of all ages. However, the problem of teen obesity raises more attention because of the health risks associated with this condition and how it is affecting even the young people. Many research studies have pointed to school vending machines and school lunch as the primary contributors to obesity problems amongst teenagers. Thus, more efforts are being done to ensure that only nutritious and healthy foods are served to these kids.

In addition to the setbacks on teens’ health, however, the rampant problem on bullying has called for another area of support when it comes to dealing with plus size teens.

Overweight teens should not therefore let their fashionable side fly out the window. There are plenty of ways that you can be overweight and still feel good about yourself.

Teens that are obese can start by looking at plus size fashion boutiques that offer a wide selection of clothes for this age range. The common fashion mistake done by plus size teens would be to hide their size and shape under baggy clothes. However, doing so will not bring any positive effect on your body. On the other hand, wearing clothes that are too tight will only serve to emphasize those extra weight that you’ve been wanting so hard to lose.

Always begin by picking the right size of clothing for your body. This is why you need to go to a specialized plus size boutique so you’d have plenty of choices. In fact, they have a number of clothing items to choose from such as tops, jeans, shirts, and dresses so you should not be limited in your own fashion style.

One trick that you can use is to layer your clothes. According to fashion experts, this will help create an illusion that’s going to make you slimmer than you actually are. You can do the layering on either the upper or bottom half of the body.

Taking care of your health should be your main priority in combating the symptoms of obesity. However, you should not put off taking care of yourself because it somewhat helps to improve your level of self confidence. You can get more valuable resources to help you find the right clothing to wear at school or basically anywhere you go to enhance your self-esteem.

As national obesity rates continue to rise, numerous Americans are being plagued with insufferable impairments such as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Not only are adults being forced to endure these ailments, but even children are developing atherosclerosis, insulin resistance, and similar diseases at an alarming rate.

In order to stifle the climb in child obesity rates and improve the health of future generations, one strategy that should be emphasized is the implementation of school health programs. By increasing exercise and decreasing caffeine intake of students, these health programs can have profound effects on the well-being of today’s children.

The Effects of Exercise on Caloric Equilibrium

One aspect of school health programs that is absolutely critical in order to improve the physical well-being of students is an increase in exercise. One reason that an increase in fitness is particularly valuable is due to its effects on caloric equilibrium.

Excess weight gain is a result of too many calories being consumed, and one of the easiest strategies for inducing a caloric deficit or preventing a caloric surplus is to increase energy expenditure through physical activity. Even as little as 100 calories per day of exercise can potentially prevent 10 pounds of fat gain per year.

Not only can physical exercise increase energy expenditure, but it may also be able to decrease the amount of calories that students consume. Exercise increases leptin sensitivity, and an increase in leptin sensitivity can cause students to feel full more easily. By increasing the amount of satiety provided by food, students may eat less and decrease their risks for obesity even further.

The Effects of Exercise on Insulin Sensitivity

Along with preventing a caloric surplus, another powerful effect of exercise is to improve insulin sensitivity. Diabetes is an insidious disease characterized by excess insulin resistance, and if left untreated, can lead to devastating effects on one’s health. Fortunately, because exercise leads to significant improvements in insulin sensitivity, an increase in physical activity is one of the most effective methods for preventing diabetes.

The Effects of Exercise on Cognitive Function

In addition to preventing obesity and diabetes, an increase in physical activity can also have a positive impact on the ability of students to learn. During exercise, a compound known as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is produced in large quantities. This potent compound helps stimulate the formation of new neurons and synapses in the brain and can greatly increase cognitive skills.

By increasing physical activity, more BDNF will become available to students during class, which can greatly improve their ability to learn. In fact, many studies have found that increasing students’ physical activity causes dramatic improvements in grades and test scores. For students who have difficulty focusing or learning new concepts, increasing exercise can be highly beneficial.

The Effects of Caffeine on Focus

Along with increasing exercise, another priority of school health programs should be to decrease students’ caffeine intake. Those who rely heavily on caffeine in order to perform during class often suffer from impaired cognitive function.

Although some students may find an acute increase in focus immediately following caffeine consumption, this effect wears off relatively quickly and results in significantly impaired focus throughout the remainder of the day. By decreasing students’ caffeine intake, many will be able to pay attention in class more easily.

The Effects of Caffeine on Sleep

Another reason that caffeine is particularly unfavorable is due to its detrimental effects on sleep. Sleep deprivation can lead to chronically elevated levels of glucorticoids, making it significantly difficult to learn and perform well. Numerous studies have found that the more sleep one receives at night, the better one does in school.

Unfortunately, consuming large amounts of caffeine is incredibly harmful for ensuring adequate sleep at night. In order to improve sleep quality, it is essential that students decrease their intake of caffeine.

Implementation

Although many may argue that increasing the exercise and decreasing the caffeine intake of students is impossible, the reality is that implementing a basic school health program is not difficult. In order to increase physical activity, younger students could be required to engage in a “recess” period, whereas older students could be required to either join a sport or enroll in a physical education class.

In order to decrease caffeine intake, one of the easiest strategies would be to impose a restriction on the sale of caffeinated beverages in school. Additionally, students could be banned from bringing in their own sodas from home, which would drastically decrease the amount of caffeine consumed.

Overall, increasing exercise and decreasing caffeine intake in children is not an overwhelming task, and can provide a plethora of benefits to their health and future. For those who value the health of America’s youth, few options are more favorable than implementing effective school health programs.

Keeping kids healthy is difficult, especially when schools have limited options and there is peer pressure to indulge in soft drinks and other sugary, non-nutritive drinks that are bad for the body. Probiotic drinks can be an excellent way for kids to have access to something that tastes good, but that is also very good for building the immune system to prevent some common digestive issues, such as diarrhea.

What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics are helpful bacteria that are often found in the digestive tract naturally. Some foods, especially fermented foods such as yogurt, have larger amount of probiotics that can assist in regulating the digestive system. There are several strains of healthy bacteria used in foods, including Lactobacillus. The most common way to use these bacteria is in food and dairy based products, but there are also probiotic supplements that you can take at home.

When considering should schools have probiotic beverages, you will want to begin by considering the risks and advantages of using the product. The bottom line is that these bacteria aren’t harmful, and unless a child has a milk allergy, or an allergy to another component of the drink, then probiotics are a great addition to the cafeteria. This is particularly true when kids are eating otherwise unhealthy lunches, since the probiotic components can promote wellness.

The Benefits

When considering should schools have probiotic beverages, you will definitely want to consider the benefits. For instance, consider the most common uses for these bacteria that include the following:

-Probiotics can regulate the digestive system.
-The healthy bacterias in probiotic containing foods can reduce the occurrence of yeast in the body, including skin yeast infections.
-Probiotics can reduce the length and occurrence of potentially infectious gastrointestinal illnesses
-Along with reducing some skin and stomach infections, probiotics can easily repopulate the digestive system with good bacteria that are killed when taking antibiotics.
-Probiotics are being studied extensively, and are completely safe. Studies have shown that these bacteria can enhance overall health and wellness, and may even boost the immune system and reduce some illnesses, such as urinary tract infections.

Probiotics have no known negative side effects, making them an ideal supplement in the lunch room. Even babies can safely consume foods rich in probiotics with no side effects. You will find that these good bacteria are found in many types of foods, including:

-Yogurt and yogurt based drinks. Look for a label that indicates the use of live cultures in the yogurt to ensure the yogurt contains probiotics.
– Some juice products are made with probiotics added. Again, reading the label is the best way to determine the strains of bacteria used in the product.
-Soy and miso often contain probiotics in varying amounts.

The Bottom Line

When deciding whether or not probiotics should be used in the classroom, you will definitely want to weigh the pros and cons. While probiotic beverages do have some health benefits, there is also the consideration that most beverages with Lactobacillis also contain a fairly significant amount of sugar, although the overall sugar factor will usually be much less than what is found in a can or bottle of soda. Additionally, those beverages with multiple strains of bacteria are often the most effective at fighting gastrointestinal upsets.

Most parents will agree that the benefits of probiotics outweigh the negative aspect of adding a little sugar to the beverage, especially when struggling to provide kids with healthy alternative to vending machine drinks and snacks. In fact, some probiotic based drinks are simply juice or pureed fruit mixed with juice, providing kids with more nutrients than other vending machine options.

Most of the people often neglect the preparation of food as an important aspect of food handling. They don’t know that even during preparation, there is already a possibility that when food is mishandled, it will contact dangerous germs and microorganisms that can become a threat to the health. As they say, prevention is the best cure and the best way therefore to keep away from food-related diseases is proper food handling. Here are some tips on handling the food especially in critical areas such as canteens and restaurants.

There are three important components in the food preparation process: the area, the ingredients and the one who prepares. First let’s talk about the cooking area. To keep away from harmful microorganisms, the cooking area must be cleaned always. The pots and the cooking should be properly cleaned, washed and stored. There should be no cockroaches or flies and the area and only way to keep these insects away is to maintain cleanliness. When you spill sauce on the cooking area, immediately clean it up so it won’t attract flies and other insects. Properly dispose of waste and segregate them in the trash. These are some cleaning tips that will help your cooking area.

When talking about ingredients, always make sure that what you are cooking are fresh ingredients. If you are not sure of the ingredient, then don’t use it. Spices such as sugar, salt and ketchup should be properly sealed so no insects can get inside. Before the actual cooking, always wash the ones that you will be keeping. You might be surprised later of harmful organisms in blood test in Portland. The one who cooks should be clean as well. Wearing the hairnet and apron is the most standard uniform when cooking. When you touch the ingredients, make sure you have washed your hands. If you can, wear gloves and other protective equipment.

With soda and sugary coffee drinks populating our culture, and many parents allowing their children to partake of such drinks regularly, it should come as no surprise that so many kids these days are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. Okay, some of those cases are actually valid, but it often seems as though parents have no idea of the effects the food and beverages they give to their children might have on their delicate systems. Lest you forget, caffeine is a stimulant, one that forces the body to produce adrenaline and cortisol, so if kids are hyped up during the day, perhaps the soda and coffee drinks are to blame. But parents aren’t alone in facilitating this ongoing problem. Schools play their part, as well, by stocking vending machines with the very caffeine that is causing students to act out in class.

There comes a time when most parents give up on trying to control what goes into their child’s mouth. Kids are going to develop their own preferences and even if you pack a lunch with healthy foods that they like, they’re going to trade with their friends for items they can’t get at home (which other, less discerning parents allow their kids to consume). And while most parents try to hold off on providing caffeinated beverages at least until their kids are in middle school (except for special occasions like birthday parties and the like), it is practically impossible to stop them when the schools are making these beverages available.

The question is: should schools be allowed to carry caffeinated beverages? Most kids these days can easily get their hands on a can of soda or a coffee drink. It’s not uncommon to see children under the age of ten standing in line at Starbucks and nobody bats an eye when even a small child is seen drinking soda at a restaurant (it even comes in kiddie cups). And with our fast-food culture, some parents are willing to give their kids whatever they want at the drive thru just to keep them quiet and get them fed quickly. So should schools be held responsible for children who purchase these beverages on campus?

In truth, if the schools are making these caffeinated drinks available, they must be held accountable. Those parents who want to keep their kids away from this and other stimulants (sugary snacks, for example) are well within their rights to do so. But if the schools offer them through vending machines, parents can’t possibly hope to have their wishes upheld. And you really can’t blame the kids – they aren’t exactly known for self-control and they rely on the adults around them for sound decision-making on their behalf.

So if schools are going to bring in vending machines as a way to make additional cash for their extracurricular activities, they should do so with the best interest of the students in mind. By providing healthier drinks like all-natural fruit juice and smoothies, or bottled water, they can still earn a bit of extra cash without giving kids the soda and other caffeinated beverages that are going to have them bouncing off the walls when they should be focusing on their studies.

With childhood obesity at an all-time high (one in three kids in America is overweight) many parents are looking to the school system to provide healthier options for their children when it comes to food and beverages. Since parents can only really control what their kids consume at home, and many rely on the options available through public schools to provide their children with at least one healthy and balanced meal each day, there is an onus on the government to ensure that the schools our tax dollars pay for are putting the best interests of our nation’s children first (in the lunch room as well as the classroom). Sadly, most school districts have a bottom line to consider, and when it comes to wheeling and dealing for cafeteria fare, they go for low-cost fillers over nutritional content.

With her “Let’s Move” campaign, First Lady Michelle Obama turned the public spotlight on the growing issue (no pun intended) of childhood obesity and the very real need for adults in this country to begin examining just what their kids are consuming. And many schools have risen to the challenge, looking for ways to meet the growing demand to provide healthier options for kids. In some cases, schools have cracked down on the prevalence of vending machines on campus. Although these food and drink dispensers provide valuable extra income for schools that are strapped for cash (often supplementing a budget so that expendable programs like arts, music, and sports might be preserved), there are better ways to expand a child’s mind than by expanding their midsection. By replacing soda with water or natural juices and ditching the chips and cookies in favor of fruit snacks or nuts, schools can still get a bump for the budget while providing a better option for the physical health of their students.

Further, many districts are exploring their options when it comes to the cuisine that populates the cafeteria. Instead of sticking with the companies they’ve been using for years, some schools are branching out by making deals with local farms or co-ops. This type of mutually beneficial relationship is not only good for kids, but also for the community at large. Children will enjoy fresh produce that was previously unavailable (in some cases, even organic options) and neighboring farms will flourish, pumping more money into the local economy and less pollution into the environment. And if schools purchase in bulk, they can get a good deal on produce (since the shipping and processing costs are minimal at the local level) and give farmers the business they need to stay afloat.

While most school districts have long-standing arrangements in place when it comes to food providers, it’s important to look at other potential sources that could provide better nutrition. Even though the main focus of any school is education, the health of their students should be of paramount importance. After all, if a child isn’t given the healthy foods that will provide them with the energy and stamina they need to function, they’re going to have a much harder time attending to academic pursuits.

1. Lead by example. Teach your children well! By eating a healthy diet at home and teaching your children to love healthy foods such as light chicken recipes and non sugary beverages, you’re instilling them with the habits that will lead to a long and healthy life where their diet is concerned. Of course, children are probably going to want to experiment with whatever their friends are eating, and unfortunately, that could mean a lot of sugar, fat, and preservatives. But most kids always come back to what is familiar, so if you start them out right, they’re going to make healthier decisions in the long run.

2. Pack lunches and snacks. One of the easiest ways to help your kids make smart choices is to select their food and drinks for them. By making the decision to give them items that will last throughout the day, you can help to ensure that they at least have healthy options within easy reach. You may not be able to control what they do when they’re out of sight, but you can definitely make their decision easier by taking the onus off of them to make it without any guidance.

3. Let kids choose. Okay, I know I just said that you need to make the choice for your kids. But if they select the items that are going in their lunch box, they’re a lot more likely to eat them. So offer a number of healthy choices (make sure some of them are fun) and let your kids take the lunch they want. They’ll still get the healthy foods you want them to have, but it will be on their terms, empowering them to make good decisions about their diet now and in the future.

4. Petition the school to remove vending machines. This is a biggie. Many schools strapped for cash turn to vending machines full of sugar- and sodium-laden snacks that get kids hooked and keep them pumping dollars into the machine (and the school). However, while this might improve the quality of education offered to your child, it won’t improve their diet or their disposition. Get other parents on board to keep local schools healthy. At the very least, strive for a compromise with vending machines that feature fruit and veggie snacks or water (instead of soda).

5. Petition the state for a healthy lunchroom initiative. With First Lady Michelle Obama spearheading efforts to improve the health of our nation’s children, the time is right to make some noise with your state legislature. An education is important, but not at the expense of your child’s health. So defy lawmakers to take the steps necessary to attend to the physical needs of students as well as fulfilling educational requirements.

Certain norms and standards have to be followed in every field of life and these standards have to be met to make a good quality product. The same story is true for food and beverages being made. Every product has to meet certain rules and come up to a level. Similarly the Food and Nutrition Information Center is one such organization that sets standards and makes sure that quality products are being made. The Food and Nutrition Information Center is a branch of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This organization sets standards and distributes information to government agencies, educators, consumers and medical professionals. The nutritional information that is provided is about nutritional guidelines, childhood nutrition, food recalls, food safety and labeling procedures.

FDA nutritional standards were developed quite a few years ago and there was a need to convey these standards among the masses and the people concerned with this field. For this very purpose two nutritionalists, started The Food and Nutrition Information Center in 1971. The goal of the FDA nutrition guides to create and awareness and prevent diet related diseases by make Americans understand the pattern of healthy eating. FDA nutritional standards are changed and modified every five years. A committee is organized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture that includes prominent figures of nutrition science community. This committee looks into changes that need to be made and public comment is also taken in to consideration.

The main feature of these nutrition standards are almost always the same as the previous guidelines. They are made on the basis of a summarization of the food pyramid. This includes vegetables, fruits, dairy products, meat, beans etc. for each group a certain intake is recommended according to the age and sex. Also the maximum and required consumption of vitamins and minerals and other nutrients is also mentioned in these guidelines that also depend on the age and sex. The changes made to the FDA nutrition standards are not just made for the sake of it but are based on studies and evidence seen from scientific literature. Any guidelines that can be improved are based on scientific studies and facts so that the best possible step can be taken.
After the first version of the nutrition guide by the FDA in 1980, important changes have been made in it. Two of which include the specific amount of the daily intake and the inclusion of fat in the typical American diet. The original guideline just mentioned which items to consume but no specific amount had been mentioned. The latest guidelines mention how much of every group should be taken. Other changes have also been made since 1980 that have created a much better standard. It is expected that in the future as well such changes will continue to follow a healthier lifestyle

The main purpose of the FDA nutritional standard is to encourage prevention of diseases by giving Americans a model to follow for a healthier life and the FDA has managed to do just that.
