As national obesity rates continue to rise, numerous Americans are being plagued with insufferable impairments such as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Not only are adults being forced to endure these ailments, but even children are developing atherosclerosis, insulin resistance, and similar diseases at an alarming rate.

In order to stifle the climb in child obesity rates and improve the health of future generations, one strategy that should be emphasized is the implementation of school health programs. By increasing exercise and decreasing caffeine intake of students, these health programs can have profound effects on the well-being of today’s children.

The Effects of Exercise on Caloric Equilibrium

One aspect of school health programs that is absolutely critical in order to improve the physical well-being of students is an increase in exercise. One reason that an increase in fitness is particularly valuable is due to its effects on caloric equilibrium.

Excess weight gain is a result of too many calories being consumed, and one of the easiest strategies for inducing a caloric deficit or preventing a caloric surplus is to increase energy expenditure through physical activity. Even as little as 100 calories per day of exercise can potentially prevent 10 pounds of fat gain per year.

Not only can physical exercise increase energy expenditure, but it may also be able to decrease the amount of calories that students consume. Exercise increases leptin sensitivity, and an increase in leptin sensitivity can cause students to feel full more easily. By increasing the amount of satiety provided by food, students may eat less and decrease their risks for obesity even further.

The Effects of Exercise on Insulin Sensitivity

Along with preventing a caloric surplus, another powerful effect of exercise is to improve insulin sensitivity. Diabetes is an insidious disease characterized by excess insulin resistance, and if left untreated, can lead to devastating effects on one’s health. Fortunately, because exercise leads to significant improvements in insulin sensitivity, an increase in physical activity is one of the most effective methods for preventing diabetes.

The Effects of Exercise on Cognitive Function

In addition to preventing obesity and diabetes, an increase in physical activity can also have a positive impact on the ability of students to learn. During exercise, a compound known as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is produced in large quantities. This potent compound helps stimulate the formation of new neurons and synapses in the brain and can greatly increase cognitive skills.

By increasing physical activity, more BDNF will become available to students during class, which can greatly improve their ability to learn. In fact, many studies have found that increasing students’ physical activity causes dramatic improvements in grades and test scores. For students who have difficulty focusing or learning new concepts, increasing exercise can be highly beneficial.

The Effects of Caffeine on Focus

Along with increasing exercise, another priority of school health programs should be to decrease students’ caffeine intake. Those who rely heavily on caffeine in order to perform during class often suffer from impaired cognitive function.

Although some students may find an acute increase in focus immediately following caffeine consumption, this effect wears off relatively quickly and results in significantly impaired focus throughout the remainder of the day. By decreasing students’ caffeine intake, many will be able to pay attention in class more easily.

The Effects of Caffeine on Sleep

Another reason that caffeine is particularly unfavorable is due to its detrimental effects on sleep. Sleep deprivation can lead to chronically elevated levels of glucorticoids, making it significantly difficult to learn and perform well. Numerous studies have found that the more sleep one receives at night, the better one does in school.

Unfortunately, consuming large amounts of caffeine is incredibly harmful for ensuring adequate sleep at night. In order to improve sleep quality, it is essential that students decrease their intake of caffeine.

Implementation

Although many may argue that increasing the exercise and decreasing the caffeine intake of students is impossible, the reality is that implementing a basic school health program is not difficult. In order to increase physical activity, younger students could be required to engage in a “recess” period, whereas older students could be required to either join a sport or enroll in a physical education class.

In order to decrease caffeine intake, one of the easiest strategies would be to impose a restriction on the sale of caffeinated beverages in school. Additionally, students could be banned from bringing in their own sodas from home, which would drastically decrease the amount of caffeine consumed.

Overall, increasing exercise and decreasing caffeine intake in children is not an overwhelming task, and can provide a plethora of benefits to their health and future. For those who value the health of America’s youth, few options are more favorable than implementing effective school health programs.

Keeping kids healthy is difficult, especially when schools have limited options and there is peer pressure to indulge in soft drinks and other sugary, non-nutritive drinks that are bad for the body. Probiotic drinks can be an excellent way for kids to have access to something that tastes good, but that is also very good for building the immune system to prevent some common digestive issues, such as diarrhea.

What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics are helpful bacteria that are often found in the digestive tract naturally. Some foods, especially fermented foods such as yogurt, have larger amount of probiotics that can assist in regulating the digestive system. There are several strains of healthy bacteria used in foods, including Lactobacillus. The most common way to use these bacteria is in food and dairy based products, but there are also probiotic supplements that you can take at home.

When considering should schools have probiotic beverages, you will want to begin by considering the risks and advantages of using the product. The bottom line is that these bacteria aren’t harmful, and unless a child has a milk allergy, or an allergy to another component of the drink, then probiotics are a great addition to the cafeteria. This is particularly true when kids are eating otherwise unhealthy lunches, since the probiotic components can promote wellness.

The Benefits

When considering should schools have probiotic beverages, you will definitely want to consider the benefits. For instance, consider the most common uses for these bacteria that include the following:

-Probiotics can regulate the digestive system.
-The healthy bacterias in probiotic containing foods can reduce the occurrence of yeast in the body, including skin yeast infections.
-Probiotics can reduce the length and occurrence of potentially infectious gastrointestinal illnesses
-Along with reducing some skin and stomach infections, probiotics can easily repopulate the digestive system with good bacteria that are killed when taking antibiotics.
-Probiotics are being studied extensively, and are completely safe. Studies have shown that these bacteria can enhance overall health and wellness, and may even boost the immune system and reduce some illnesses, such as urinary tract infections.

Probiotics have no known negative side effects, making them an ideal supplement in the lunch room. Even babies can safely consume foods rich in probiotics with no side effects. You will find that these good bacteria are found in many types of foods, including:

-Yogurt and yogurt based drinks. Look for a label that indicates the use of live cultures in the yogurt to ensure the yogurt contains probiotics.
– Some juice products are made with probiotics added. Again, reading the label is the best way to determine the strains of bacteria used in the product.
-Soy and miso often contain probiotics in varying amounts.

The Bottom Line

When deciding whether or not probiotics should be used in the classroom, you will definitely want to weigh the pros and cons. While probiotic beverages do have some health benefits, there is also the consideration that most beverages with Lactobacillis also contain a fairly significant amount of sugar, although the overall sugar factor will usually be much less than what is found in a can or bottle of soda. Additionally, those beverages with multiple strains of bacteria are often the most effective at fighting gastrointestinal upsets.

Most parents will agree that the benefits of probiotics outweigh the negative aspect of adding a little sugar to the beverage, especially when struggling to provide kids with healthy alternative to vending machine drinks and snacks. In fact, some probiotic based drinks are simply juice or pureed fruit mixed with juice, providing kids with more nutrients than other vending machine options.

Most of the people often neglect the preparation of food as an important aspect of food handling. They don’t know that even during preparation, there is already a possibility that when food is mishandled, it will contact dangerous germs and microorganisms that can become a threat to the health. As they say, prevention is the best cure and the best way therefore to keep away from food-related diseases is proper food handling. Here are some tips on handling the food especially in critical areas such as canteens and restaurants.

There are three important components in the food preparation process: the area, the ingredients and the one who prepares. First let’s talk about the cooking area. To keep away from harmful microorganisms, the cooking area must be cleaned always. The pots and the cooking should be properly cleaned, washed and stored. There should be no cockroaches or flies and the area and only way to keep these insects away is to maintain cleanliness. When you spill sauce on the cooking area, immediately clean it up so it won’t attract flies and other insects. Properly dispose of waste and segregate them in the trash. These are some cleaning tips that will help your cooking area.

When talking about ingredients, always make sure that what you are cooking are fresh ingredients. If you are not sure of the ingredient, then don’t use it. Spices such as sugar, salt and ketchup should be properly sealed so no insects can get inside. Before the actual cooking, always wash the ones that you will be keeping. You might be surprised later of harmful organisms in blood test in Portland. The one who cooks should be clean as well. Wearing the hairnet and apron is the most standard uniform when cooking. When you touch the ingredients, make sure you have washed your hands. If you can, wear gloves and other protective equipment.

With soda and sugary coffee drinks populating our culture, and many parents allowing their children to partake of such drinks regularly, it should come as no surprise that so many kids these days are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. Okay, some of those cases are actually valid, but it often seems as though parents have no idea of the effects the food and beverages they give to their children might have on their delicate systems. Lest you forget, caffeine is a stimulant, one that forces the body to produce adrenaline and cortisol, so if kids are hyped up during the day, perhaps the soda and coffee drinks are to blame. But parents aren’t alone in facilitating this ongoing problem. Schools play their part, as well, by stocking vending machines with the very caffeine that is causing students to act out in class.

There comes a time when most parents give up on trying to control what goes into their child’s mouth. Kids are going to develop their own preferences and even if you pack a lunch with healthy foods that they like, they’re going to trade with their friends for items they can’t get at home (which other, less discerning parents allow their kids to consume). And while most parents try to hold off on providing caffeinated beverages at least until their kids are in middle school (except for special occasions like birthday parties and the like), it is practically impossible to stop them when the schools are making these beverages available.

The question is: should schools be allowed to carry caffeinated beverages? Most kids these days can easily get their hands on a can of soda or a coffee drink. It’s not uncommon to see children under the age of ten standing in line at Starbucks and nobody bats an eye when even a small child is seen drinking soda at a restaurant (it even comes in kiddie cups). And with our fast-food culture, some parents are willing to give their kids whatever they want at the drive thru just to keep them quiet and get them fed quickly. So should schools be held responsible for children who purchase these beverages on campus?

In truth, if the schools are making these caffeinated drinks available, they must be held accountable. Those parents who want to keep their kids away from this and other stimulants (sugary snacks, for example) are well within their rights to do so. But if the schools offer them through vending machines, parents can’t possibly hope to have their wishes upheld. And you really can’t blame the kids – they aren’t exactly known for self-control and they rely on the adults around them for sound decision-making on their behalf.

So if schools are going to bring in vending machines as a way to make additional cash for their extracurricular activities, they should do so with the best interest of the students in mind. By providing healthier drinks like all-natural fruit juice and smoothies, or bottled water, they can still earn a bit of extra cash without giving kids the soda and other caffeinated beverages that are going to have them bouncing off the walls when they should be focusing on their studies.

With childhood obesity at an all-time high (one in three kids in America is overweight) many parents are looking to the school system to provide healthier options for their children when it comes to food and beverages. Since parents can only really control what their kids consume at home, and many rely on the options available through public schools to provide their children with at least one healthy and balanced meal each day, there is an onus on the government to ensure that the schools our tax dollars pay for are putting the best interests of our nation’s children first (in the lunch room as well as the classroom). Sadly, most school districts have a bottom line to consider, and when it comes to wheeling and dealing for cafeteria fare, they go for low-cost fillers over nutritional content.

With her “Let’s Move” campaign, First Lady Michelle Obama turned the public spotlight on the growing issue (no pun intended) of childhood obesity and the very real need for adults in this country to begin examining just what their kids are consuming. And many schools have risen to the challenge, looking for ways to meet the growing demand to provide healthier options for kids. In some cases, schools have cracked down on the prevalence of vending machines on campus. Although these food and drink dispensers provide valuable extra income for schools that are strapped for cash (often supplementing a budget so that expendable programs like arts, music, and sports might be preserved), there are better ways to expand a child’s mind than by expanding their midsection. By replacing soda with water or natural juices and ditching the chips and cookies in favor of fruit snacks or nuts, schools can still get a bump for the budget while providing a better option for the physical health of their students.

Further, many districts are exploring their options when it comes to the cuisine that populates the cafeteria. Instead of sticking with the companies they’ve been using for years, some schools are branching out by making deals with local farms or co-ops. This type of mutually beneficial relationship is not only good for kids, but also for the community at large. Children will enjoy fresh produce that was previously unavailable (in some cases, even organic options) and neighboring farms will flourish, pumping more money into the local economy and less pollution into the environment. And if schools purchase in bulk, they can get a good deal on produce (since the shipping and processing costs are minimal at the local level) and give farmers the business they need to stay afloat.

While most school districts have long-standing arrangements in place when it comes to food providers, it’s important to look at other potential sources that could provide better nutrition. Even though the main focus of any school is education, the health of their students should be of paramount importance. After all, if a child isn’t given the healthy foods that will provide them with the energy and stamina they need to function, they’re going to have a much harder time attending to academic pursuits.

Controlling your children’s diet before they start school is not too difficult, since they are almost entirely dependent on you to provide sustenance. But once they’re out the door and on their way to school, you lose the ability to ensure that they’re partaking of nutritious foods and beverages. However, you can still influence your kids to make good choices even when you’re not around. By providing them with healthy options and teaching them to eat right, you can give them the best chance to make good decisions when it comes to their diet. Here’s how.

1. Lead by example. Teach your children well! By eating a healthy diet at home and teaching your children to love healthy foods such as light chicken recipes and non sugary beverages, you’re instilling them with the habits that will lead to a long and healthy life where their diet is concerned. Of course, children are probably going to want to experiment with whatever their friends are eating, and unfortunately, that could mean a lot of sugar, fat, and preservatives. But most kids always come back to what is familiar, so if you start them out right, they’re going to make healthier decisions in the long run.

2. Pack lunches and snacks. One of the easiest ways to help your kids make smart choices is to select their food and drinks for them. By making the decision to give them items that will last throughout the day, you can help to ensure that they at least have healthy options within easy reach. You may not be able to control what they do when they’re out of sight, but you can definitely make their decision easier by taking the onus off of them to make it without any guidance.

3. Let kids choose. Okay, I know I just said that you need to make the choice for your kids. But if they select the items that are going in their lunch box, they’re a lot more likely to eat them. So offer a number of healthy choices (make sure some of them are fun) and let your kids take the lunch they want. They’ll still get the healthy foods you want them to have, but it will be on their terms, empowering them to make good decisions about their diet now and in the future.

4. Petition the school to remove vending machines. This is a biggie. Many schools strapped for cash turn to vending machines full of sugar- and sodium-laden snacks that get kids hooked and keep them pumping dollars into the machine (and the school). However, while this might improve the quality of education offered to your child, it won’t improve their diet or their disposition. Get other parents on board to keep local schools healthy. At the very least, strive for a compromise with vending machines that feature fruit and veggie snacks or water (instead of soda).

5. Petition the state for a healthy lunchroom initiative. With First Lady Michelle Obama spearheading efforts to improve the health of our nation’s children, the time is right to make some noise with your state legislature. An education is important, but not at the expense of your child’s health. So defy lawmakers to take the steps necessary to attend to the physical needs of students as well as fulfilling educational requirements.

Certain norms and standards have to be followed in every field of life and these standards have to be met to make a good quality product. The same story is true for food and beverages being made. Every product has to meet certain rules and come up to a level. Similarly the Food and Nutrition Information Center is one such organization that sets standards and makes sure that quality products are being made. The Food and Nutrition Information Center is a branch of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This organization sets standards and distributes information to government agencies, educators, consumers and medical professionals. The nutritional information that is provided is about nutritional guidelines, childhood nutrition, food recalls, food safety and labeling procedures.

FDA nutritional standards were developed quite a few years ago and there was a need to convey these standards among the masses and the people concerned with this field. For this very purpose two nutritionalists, started The Food and Nutrition Information Center in 1971. The goal of the FDA nutrition guides to create and awareness and prevent diet related diseases by make Americans understand the pattern of healthy eating. FDA nutritional standards are changed and modified every five years. A committee is organized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture that includes prominent figures of nutrition science community. This committee looks into changes that need to be made and public comment is also taken in to consideration.

The main feature of these nutrition standards are almost always the same as the previous guidelines. They are made on the basis of a summarization of the food pyramid. This includes vegetables, fruits, dairy products, meat, beans etc. for each group a certain intake is recommended according to the age and sex. Also the maximum and required consumption of vitamins and minerals and other nutrients is also mentioned in these guidelines that also depend on the age and sex. The changes made to the FDA nutrition standards are not just made for the sake of it but are based on studies and evidence seen from scientific literature. Any guidelines that can be improved are based on scientific studies and facts so that the best possible step can be taken.
After the first version of the nutrition guide by the FDA in 1980, important changes have been made in it. Two of which include the specific amount of the daily intake and the inclusion of fat in the typical American diet. The original guideline just mentioned which items to consume but no specific amount had been mentioned. The latest guidelines mention how much of every group should be taken. Other changes have also been made since 1980 that have created a much better standard. It is expected that in the future as well such changes will continue to follow a healthier lifestyle

The main purpose of the FDA nutritional standard is to encourage prevention of diseases by giving Americans a model to follow for a healthier life and the FDA has managed to do just that.

Every individual has a choice to make on how to lead a healthy life. Families and individuals are in a dilemma nowadays with the amount of carious items available in the markets that are full of calories and fat. In circumstances such as these it is difficult to make the right choice. These products have lead to an ever increasing rate in obesity and health disease like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis. To overcome this scenario steps are needed on everyone’s behalf. Not only do families and schools need to prevent these products but policy makers, health professionals as well as businesses need to take active part to make America healthy place to live in. this will give the upcoming generation a chance to live a healthy, productive and disease free life.

So how can everyone help Americans make healthy choices? It has been noted that certain elements make an individual make choices. There are individual factors like age, gender, family pattern and the physical activity pattern make one decide what food items to choose. On an individual level it can be tried to make amends to the beliefs and knowledge of people and make them realize of the food they consume. Similarly environmental elements play an active role by their policies and organizational environments as well as by giving knowledge to consumer. Food and beverage consumption and physical activity go hand in hand. After the individual and environmental setting, the influence organizations like the media and the government affect the decisions of Americans. And lastly social and cultural values effect them too but not to a high degree.

It boils down to this that every American has to decide on his or her own basis what food items to and drinks to choose. But they can be influenced in different ways. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines give three guiding principles which state that there is a surety that Americans have access to healthy food items and an opportunity for physical activity too. Secondly strategies should be applied to change behaviors at an individual level. Lastly these steps should not be only of temporary nature but lifelong. Physical activity, healthy eating and weight management behaviors should be made life long strategies. Remedies begin at homes. Parents and schools play a vital character in creating a good lifestyle for children. They can provide kids with nutritious foods from the very beginning and encourage them for physical activity. This will become their life pattern and they won’t need to divert from bad eating habits. Similarly, communities and existing systems and infrastructures can support parents and schools in this area by facilitating physical activity and healthy eating. A few strategies can be applied foaming Americans make healthy choices like, expanding access to grocery stores and farmers markets, developing safe agriculture practices, make physical activity obtainable, reducing television time for kids, by providing nutrition literacy to families and also by developing policies for reducing health risk.

These steps maybe small ones but their effect is quite large and influential. This will promote healthy eating habits in the new generation so that a healthy America prevails.

With the evolving beverages in the world today, there is dire need for nutrient dense beverages in every individual’s lifestyle especially in teenagers and adolescents. The diet that we take in today does not meet up our body’s requirements. It is insufficient. So what exactly are nutrient dense beverages? They are those drinks that contain some specified and significant amounts of minerals and vitamins that we should have in our daily diet. These beverages have considerably less calories as compared to sodas and other artificial drinks in the market. Nutrient dense beverages are such a drink that not only takes care of our nutrient concerns but also of our calorie intake.

There have been a number of plans set out by the government for bringing a healthy lifestyle to the kids and people. Some states have established standards for the food and beverages available in schools. School wellness plans have been created that follow the pattern of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The guidelines set forth have proven beneficial for nutrition educators and health providers alike. The authorities have emphasized only on nutrient dense foods while nutrient dense beverages are just an important category to look into. Keeping a check on what you eat helps out in leading a disease free and healthy life. A person should try to take in drinks and meals that are high in nutrients and low in calories which will lead to reduced risk of chronic diseases.

The diet of American kids has been seen to fall short of the basic nutrients that the body requires. The USDA and the Dietary Guidelines have set aside a group of key nutrients that are a must for any child. This group contains potassium, calcium, fiber, magnesium and vitamin E. these nutrients play an integral role in reducing chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases as well. Other important nutrients include vitamin A, C and D. dietary guidelines have been set by the USDA and they recommend that nutrient dense beverages should have a specific amount of these nutrients contained within them. Nutrient dense beverages should contain a maximum of 90 calories for every 8 oz of serving. Similarly the other nutrients have a set criterion. For every 8 oz serving, calcium should be present in a minimum amount of 250 mg, potassium in 350 mg, fiber in 1 gm, magnesium in 40 mg, vitamin E in 2.25 IU, vitamin D in 20 IU and last vitamin E should be present in a minimum amount of 500 IU per 8 oz of serving. At least three of the above criterions should be met by any nutrient dense beverage, only then can a drink be termed as healthy for intake by kids.

Nutrient dense beverages are a healthy choice after skimmed and low fat milk. They can have a positive impact on the diets of children all over the United States and help children and their families alike to have a happy and healthy life free of diseases.

With the increasing number of child obesity cases n the United States today there is a dire need for implementation of a healthier lifestyle and eating habits in school all over. Nutritional guidelines have been set by school districts all over to have a positive impact on student health as well as improve the environment within schools. The guideline set forth for the beverages available in schools encourage schools to keep low calorie drinks and nutritious beverages instead of high calorie ones. Child obesity and other diseases are developed due to many other reasons but the core problem lies in the fact the younger generation consumes calories much more than they burn. These beverage guidelines are just the first step to help kids maintain a healthy lifestyle at an early age.

The industry of beverage has complied with these guidelines for a better living for kids and teenagers. It has responded positively to these standards and are implementing them in various schools. Different tactics are being used for promotion of healthy drinks amongst the new generation. The most important step that has been taken in this regard is the restriction of sales of soft drinks in schools. This policy has allowed vendors to sell water and 100% pure fruit juice in elementary schools where as in middle school dairy based drinks, water, diets sodas and diet juice drinks can be sold. The standard for high school is also almost the same as middle school standards. The guidelines for beverages in schools are developed for the well being of kids. This program is intended for the lowering of calorie intake in the young masses and the increase in the intake of nutritious beverages during a school day.

Certain norms and standards have to be followed for the implementation of this program. It has been categorized into three groups that are beverage guidelines for elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. For high school, it has been made compulsory that 50% of the beverages must be water or low calorie drinks. For all three school types water is a must which can be of any size. For elementary schools, 150 calories for 8 oz servings is allowed for both plain fat free or low fat milk and favored fat free milk. 100% pure juices are also set as a criterion for elementary schools which can contain up to 120 calories per 8 oz. On a similar patter, middle schools standards are also almost the same with 188 calories per 10 oz for plain fat free and flavored fat free milk. Where as for 100% juice 150 calories per 10 oz is allowed. Low calorie and other drinks have been deemed as unnecessary for elementary and middle schools. For high schools 225 calories are allowed for 12 oz servings for both plain fat free and flavored fat free milk and 180 calories for 12 oz is 100% juice. Other drinks that contain up to 66 calories per 8oz have been allowed only to high schools. These guidelines have been set and are proving to be beneficial. It is a slow process but slowly gaining popularity.

These guidelines for beverages in schools are supported by science and are created in response to concern about children’s health these days. No doubt they will prove effective and beneficial if followed to the last degree.
