FDA Nutritional Standards

Certain norms and standards have to be followed in every field of life and these standards have to be met to make a good quality product. The same story is true for food and beverages being made. Every product has to meet certain rules and come up to a level. Similarly the Food and Nutrition Information Center is one such organization that sets standards and makes sure that quality products are being made. The Food and Nutrition Information Center is a branch of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This organization sets standards and distributes information to government agencies, educators, consumers and medical professionals. The nutritional information that is provided is about nutritional guidelines, childhood nutrition, food recalls, food safety and labeling procedures.

FDA Nutritional StandardsFDA nutritional standards were developed quite a few years ago and there was a need to convey these standards among the masses and the people concerned with this field. For this very purpose two nutritionalists, started The Food and Nutrition Information Center in 1971. The goal of the FDA nutrition guides to create and awareness and prevent diet related diseases by make Americans understand the pattern of healthy eating. FDA nutritional standards are changed and modified every five years. A committee is organized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture that includes prominent figures of nutrition science community. This committee looks into changes that need to be made and public comment is also taken in to consideration.

The main feature of these nutrition standards are almost always the same as the previous guidelines. They are made on the basis of a summarization of the food pyramid. This includes vegetables, fruits, dairy products, meat, beans etc. for each group a certain intake is recommended according to the age and sex. Also the maximum and required consumption of vitamins and minerals and other nutrients is also mentioned in these guidelines that also depend on the age and sex. The changes made to the FDA nutrition standards are not just made for the sake of it but are based on studies and evidence seen from scientific literature. Any guidelines that can be improved are based on scientific studies and facts so that the best possible step can be taken.
After the first version of the nutrition guide by the FDA in 1980, important changes have been made in it. Two of which include the specific amount of the daily intake and the inclusion of fat in the typical American diet. The original guideline just mentioned which items to consume but no specific amount had been mentioned. The latest guidelines mention how much of every group should be taken. Other changes have also been made since 1980 that have created a much better standard. It is expected that in the future as well such changes will continue to follow a healthier lifestyle

The main purpose of the FDA nutritional standard is to encourage prevention of diseases by giving Americans a model to follow for a healthier life and the FDA has managed to do just that.
